Wear Problems

Wear concentrated in the center of the tread means the tire has been chronically overinflated. Wear on both outer edges means chronic underinflation. Wear on one edge only points to an alignment problem. Cupping or scalloping across the tread surface suggests a balance or suspension issue. Each pattern identifies a specific, fixable cause, and addressing the cause before replacing the tire prevents the same pattern from destroying the replacement.

The main patterns and their typical causes:

  • Center tread wear — chronic overinflation

  • Shoulder wear (both edges) — chronic underinflation

  • One-sided wear (inner or outer edge only) — wheel alignment problem

  • Cupping or scalloping (wavy, uneven surface) — wheel imbalance or worn shock absorbers

  • Feathering (sharp edge one side, rounded other) — toe alignment issue

  • Flat spots — wheel lock from hard braking, or from extended stationary storage

The underlying cause can be corrected — misalignment fixed, pressure adjusted, shocks replaced — but the wear pattern itself on the tire cannot be reversed. Once one part of the tread has worn more than the rest, that asymmetry remains. Correcting the cause stops the pattern from getting worse, but the tire may need to be replaced depending on how far the wear has progressed, and whether the remaining tread depth is adequate.

An imbalanced wheel creates a small but repeated bouncing force at each rotation that causes the tread to contact the road unevenly. Over time this produces the cupped or scalloped wear pattern — an undulating surface rather than a smooth one. Once this pattern develops it's irreversible, and the uneven surface itself generates vibration and noise. The fix is to correct the imbalance and, if the wear is severe, replace the affected tire.

Hard acceleration causes tread wear on the driven wheels — the rubber is literally scrubbed off by the torque. Hard braking causes flat spots or accelerated wear on the braking contact area. Aggressive cornering loads the outer shoulder heavily. None of these individually destroys a tire, but they each shorten its usable life. Smoother inputs — gradual acceleration, early and progressive braking, smooth steering — preserve the compound and extend tread life.

Faster-than-expected wear usually has one of these causes: the tires are being run underinflated (the most common), the vehicle has an alignment issue that's scrubbing the tread, the vehicle is frequently overloaded, or the driving style involves frequent hard acceleration or cornering. In some cases the comparison is also relevant — a softer, higher-grip compound wears faster than a harder touring compound, which may simply reflect different tire designs rather than a problem.

Rotate immediately — don't wait until the next scheduled interval. Uneven wear between positions means the tires in heavier-duty positions (front tires on front-wheel-drive vehicles, for instance) have used more of their tread than the others. Rotating moves them to a lighter-duty position and redistributes the remaining wear more evenly across all four. Also address the root cause — if alignment or inflation is wrong, rotation helps but doesn't fix the underlying issue.
