The Michelin tire pressure guide for your bicycle

Michelin's pressure guide provides specific PSI and BAR recommendations cross-referenced by rider weight and tire width, for road, gravel and cyclocross, and mountain bike setups. Front and rear recommendations are separate, reflecting the different weight distribution across each wheel. Tubeless setups are accounted for with lower pressure ranges that reflect the absence of pinch flat risk. Use the guide as a starting point, then adjust slightly based on your specific surface: rougher terrain benefits from slightly lower pressure within the recommended range.

In all cases, the pressure recommended by the bicycle manufacturer or the tire manufacturer must be followed, check your tire pressure before riding.

Bicycle tire pressure must always be adapted to :

  • The tire used

  • The tire section width

  • The use of the tire

  • The weight of the rider

  • The bicycle used

 

The pressure tables below are a reference for setting the correct pressure. But do not hesitate to adjust them slightly according to your practice and especially according to the surface on which you ride. A good tire pressure is a customised pressure.

No. The pressure on the tire sidewall is the maximum the tire can handle — not the recommended operating pressure for your specific weight and use. Inflating to the maximum is almost always too hard for normal riding and can reduce grip and comfort significantly. Use Michelin's bike tire pressure guide — which accounts for rider weight, tire width, and riding type — to find the appropriate working pressure, then adjust slightly based on your surface and feel.

For most recreational and training rides, pre-ride pressure set for the primary surface is sufficient. Competitive or performance-focused riders may carry a small pump or inflator to adjust pressure for specific sections — lowering pressure before a long gravel or rough section and raising it again for smooth road portions. This is more common in gravel racing, where courses mix surfaces significantly. For everyday riding, setting pressure appropriately for the worst surface you'll encounter is a practical approach.

Overinflated tires are also more vulnerable to impact damage — the harder the tire, the less it can absorb a sharp impact, concentrating the force on the casing. Center tread wear also accelerates with overinflation.

In a tubed setup, pinch flats become a risk when the tire is compressed by an impact between the rim and a hard obstacle. Rolling resistance increases because a tire that deforms excessively loses energy through the deformation cycle. Handling can become vague, particularly on road bikes where a very soft tire makes the steering feel unprecise. Sidewall damage can occur if the underinflated tire folds under load, causing the sidewall to contact the rim. Tubeless setups manage lower pressures better, but there are still limits below which handling and tire integrity suffer.

A rough check: press your thumb firmly into the tire's center tread. For road tires, the tire should feel rock-solid — if it gives at all, it's likely underinflated. For gravel tires, a small amount of give is appropriate. For mountain bike tires, you should be able to depress the tire slightly with sustained thumb pressure. This is a rough guide only — a pump with a gauge is the only reliable way to confirm actual pressure. The thumb test helps identify obvious underinflation but can't distinguish between correct pressure and overinflation.
