A DAY TRIP TO COASTAL ST MICHAELS, MARYLAND

July 31, 2020

This day trip takes you from Washington, DC to the Chesapeake Bay town, St Michaels. This coastal town’s small size makes it perfect for an easy one-day getaway. See beautiful antique cars, eat ultra-fresh seafood, set sail on a vintage sailboat, and cap off the day with a refreshing craft brew.

To help combat the spread of covid-19, some venues below may be closed or by appointment or reservation only. Check opening hours before you go. Note that masks are required inside all venues except when you’re eating.

The drive from DC to St. Michaels is 1h30m to 2h20m, depending on traffic. You’ll be driving along US-50 E the entire way. For a break en route, stop at The Market at the Chesapeake Bay Beach Club (50m-1h20m from DC), which sells coffee, tea, and cafe fare. From here it’s 45m-1h to St. Michaels.

Start the day in St. Michaels at the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum, an interactive museum that invites visitors to learn about the history of the Chesapeake Bay. Its buildings include an 1879 lighthouse, a working shipyard, and a fleet of historic boats dating to the late 19th and early 20th century.

Classic Motor Museum is a must for gearheads who are sure to drool over its gorgeous pre- and post-war cars, trucks, and motorcycles. Particularly pretty are a bottle green 1968 Ginetta G16/BMW racing car and a 1931 American LaFrance fire truck that you can climb aboard.

Stick to the nautical theme with lunch at Awful Arthur’s. Sit outdoors and tuck into oysters, crab cakes, lobster rolls, and other briney bites (if you come in winter, warm up with a bowl of rich, tomatoey Maryland crab soup).

Take to the sea on Sail Selina, a 1926, 41-foot sailboat captained by Iris Clarke. Captain Clarke runs a variety of sailing excursions; book here or call ahead to see what’s available.

Where to stay

Inn at Perry Cabin: If you want to stay the night in St. Michaels, book in at this 78-room hotel, in an early-19th-century white Colonial mansion. Though the building is historic, rooms are a pleasant mix of modern and antique furnishings, and some have patios and decks accessed through French doors. Swim outdoors, play croquet and bocce, cycle around town, or play a round of golf at the Links at Perry Cabin.
