Tire Highlights

Variable thickness sipes provide additional biting edges in low–grip conditions to improve wet and snow traction, but lock together in dry conditions to provide crisp handling and longer treadwear.

Unique biting edges in the grooves grip snow for better acceleration and braking in snowy conditions.

Helio compound with sunflower oil helps to increase traction at low temperatures, while extreme silica technology provides exceptional wet grip.

Asymetric tread pattern and Variable Contact Patch 2.0 design result in strong dry performance combined with long tread life.

Michelin Sums Up New Pilot Sport AS/3 by Spider Chart

Regardless of the (relative) charms of illustrating a tire's capabilities via infographic, there's no substitute for firsthand experience-- and indeed, our recent test at NOLA Motorsports Park revealed favorable seat of the pants impressions against its competitors, with exceptional performance on wet autocross courses.

Comments about Pilot Sport A/S 3:

Our family relies on Michelin tires for all 5 of our vehicles. Recently I replaced my Primacy tires with the Pilot Sport A/S 3 tires and wow! what a wonderful difference!! The ride is incredibly smooth and the road noise is minimal. Definite noticeable improvement in how the car handles (acceleration, tracking and braking). I'm sold on these tires and can't wait to try them out in rain/snow conditions. Never thought I would actually look forward driving out in the rain and snow but these tires certainly give me the confidence to know I will be able to drive safely to any destination and under any conditons.

            A/S 3: A true allseason performance tire

Comments about Pilot Sport A/S 3:

I have a 2014 MINI Roadster S. I have been driving since 1962 and autocrossing with success since 1995. I have driven on extreme performance tires, r-compound tires, and racing slicks, both dry and wet. Yesterday I brought home a set of 205/50-16 A/S 3's in the rain.

Today it rained harder and I found the standing water puddle on my most driven back road. I heard the right front tire violently cutting through the water at 60 mph but it didn't even tug on the tire nor slow the car as that friendly puddle has always done before.

The steering is light. Partly due to 10.5mm of tread and partly due to surprisingly low rolling resistance. Turn in is immediate. Well, surely there must be an actual delay but it is too small for me to perceive. Grip is somewhere well beyond the level I am willing to risk on a public road. They simply track no matter how fast I dare corner with them at gendarme and bad karma attracting speeds. For reference, the car on OEM tires understeered if I tried to have much of any fun cornering. That is, the tires lost grip and the car ran wide which is especially unnerving in a right hand turn with oncoming traffic.

These are serious performance tires oh so well suited to a MINI driven in all weathers except snow blizzards and subzero temperatures.

                  Pilot Sport A/S 3 - Amazing Tire

Comments about Pilot Sport A/S 3:

Michelin Pilot Sport A/S 3 - The new A/S 3 replaced the second generation A/S Plus, that began to slightly chunk it's tread with only 16,000 miles (3/32nd's of wear) on the tires and caused a slight front-end vibration on my Mercedes CLK430. It is very rare when Michelin makes a mistake on engineering, but many had issues with the A/S Plus. Not a problem, as Michelin stood by their warrany and the tire dealer correctly pro-rated the tires. Because of the issues with the old A/S Plus, Michelin has re-engineered the tread design and pattern on the new A/S 3, so I don't expect to have the slight tire chunking issues as I did on the A/S Plus. Since I had only 16,000 miles on the old A/S Plus, it was a good comparison when driving them back-to-back. I have had them on my vehicle for only one day (12/1/2014). My initial observations; the new A/S 3 tires are quieter than the old A/S Plus. The new A/S 3 tires are truly amazing in the rain. The old ones, when cold in the rain, would engage the traction control while accelerating hard from a dead stop. The new ones just grip and go. When the A/S 3's are up to temperature, it feels like you are not driving in the rain, but on dry asphalt. I have even pushed the speed envelope in moderate rain, with no other cars around. Slight left and right steering at triple digit speeds showed absolutely no hydroplaning. Truly amazing. I am sure Germany will love these tires on their unrestricted speed autobahn. The CLK430 already had amazing brakes, but with the new A/S 3, you had better keep an eye in your rearview mirror if stopping hard in the rain, because the person behind you will never stop as short as you will with these tires. I don't know how Michelin accomplished that feat of magic. I have not been able to push these tires hard in the dry, as it has been raining in Sacramento, California and the tires have not yet gone through a natural heat cycle. The gas mileage appears to be the same as with the old A/S Plus, which was very good. Ride comfort is interesting. I can feel a stiiffer sidewall at initial turn-in bite and when cornering, but the overall ride comfort is the same as the A/S Plus, which on the CLK430, was very good. I am sure ride comfort will depend on the vehicle, shock spring rates, dampening, rebound, vehicle sound insulation, etc. Michelin makes some of the best tires in the world, I believe everyone will agree upon that fact. The new A/S 3's have pushed the envelope in the rain and based upon reviews, have pushed the envelope in the dry for an all season tire. I will update this review for dry traction cornering and wear-life at the appropriate time. Well done Michelin.
