Michelin's New Defender® Tire Boasts 90,000 Mile Warranty

Low rolling resistance has become the new clarion call from car manufacturers hoping to eke out every last 1/10th of a mile per gallon for EPA ratings, but Michelin's new Defender tire takes a different tack, claiming the highest mileage warranty yet: 90,000 clicks, up to 21,000 more miles than competitors.

Pennies On The Mile: Michelin® Defender® Tires Aim to Save the Fuel, Last 90,000 Miles

Typically, if it’s not super-sticky, high-performance rubber, we’re not all that excited when new tires come out. But Michelin has some interesting ideas in the Defender, and if the tires can truly last up to 90,000 miles in the real world, the company might raise an eyebrow or two.

    Seem OK, But Very Noisy

          Comments about Defender:

I just put a set of Michelin Defenders on my 2007 Honda CR-V. Have very little experience with them so far, so I can't comment on wear, wet and snowy perfomance, etc. I was running Michelin Latitudes previously and changed them out with approx. 60,000 miles on them. What I CAN say so far is that the Defenders are quite loud at speeds abouve about 55 MPH. I get a sort of "droaning" sound from the tires on the back end. Interesting thing is that the tires only exhibit this on asphalt roadways. I do NOT hear it on concrete roadways. I would think that if it had something to do with my vehicle I'd hear it on ALL road surfaces. Perhaps it has something to do with the weight distribution of the CR-V and the rear tires seem noisy but not the front. Can't quite come to grips with the noisy tires only on asphalt though. Everything else seems to be OK. No problem with alignment or balance. Was thinking about putting some extra weight in the cargo area just to see if that made a difference with the rear tire noise.

I have been a Michelin fan for around 30 years. I spent the extra on these tires for the tread life warranty. For me, the jury is still out on these tires. If they are just noisy, I will probably learn to live with it, but I've never has new tires that were this noisy before, nor have I spent so much for a set of tires before.

                Comments about Defender:

I bought this tire, because it is the highest rated tire for my car. Everything about the tire is outstanding Except it is extremely noisey, especially at speeds of 35-40 MPH which I drive the most.

                      Comments about Defender:

The tires had a nice ride but I only got 44,000 mile out of them. I had the tires rotated regularly and kept up with the correct pressure. I was told I need 4 new tires. I got tow of them. They gave me a buy one get one deal since I only had half of the wear but I still needed to pay for mounting, balancing, disposal, etc. I will not buy these again due to the fact they do not get close to 90,000 miles.
