Michelin's New Defender® Tire Boasts 90,000 Mile Warranty

Low rolling resistance has become the new clarion call from car manufacturers hoping to eke out every last 1/10th of a mile per gallon for EPA ratings, but Michelin's new Defender tire takes a different tack, claiming the highest mileage warranty yet: 90,000 clicks, up to 21,000 more miles than competitors.

Pennies On The Mile: Michelin® Defender® Tires Aim to Save the Fuel, Last 90,000 Miles

Typically, if it’s not super-sticky, high-performance rubber, we’re not all that excited when new tires come out. But Michelin has some interesting ideas in the Defender, and if the tires can truly last up to 90,000 miles in the real world, the company might raise an eyebrow or two.

    Nothing but Michelins

          Comments about Defender:

I purchased my current car (1996 Mercury Grand Marquis) new in 1996. It came with the Michelin XGT4 tire. This was the first tire I have ever owned that would run smooth at all speeds. At 80,000 miles I went back to Michelin and purchased 1 set of X-one tires, and another set of X-one tires at 160,000 miles. Just today purchased a set of Defender tires at 232,000 miles. I have never had a problem with any Michelin tires I have purchased. I am concerned when I read comments from others about these tires, but, I can tell you that right now these tires are the berries.....Given the advanced age of the car (20 years) and the mileage, I doubt that I will need another set, but, if I do, they will be Michelins. All of these sets have run smooth for their lifetimes and I am very satisfied. I run them on all my vehicles. Keep up the good work Michelin!

                Comments about Defender:

I just replaced the defenders on my es330 really like the ride and quietness of the tire but they did not come close to the 80,000 mile warranty. At 55,000 they were within a hairs thickness of the wear marks indicating replacement. I live in AZ and I am sure the intense heat is largely responsible for their early demise. Still, for a thousand bucks they should go the distance.

Good But a Step Down in Noise and Ride

                By Raj

                from USA

                Comments about Defender:

I just purchased a used 2012 Honda Accord LX-P. The dealer agreed to replace the current set of OEM tires (with 29,000 miles) that had a bit of vibration coming from them - I assume uneven tread wear. To my delight they agreed to replace all 4 with Michelin Tires as part of the sale! That was done with an alignment. They installed the Defenders on the Accord and immediately I could tell that they were a very smooth tire! To my dismay there were also noticeably noisier on roads that had a more rough surface. This is the first set of Michelins I have encountered a noise issue after purchase. I have them on my other cars and they are the quietest tires I have purchased.

                Thank you.
