Michelin's New Defender® Tire Boasts 90,000 Mile Warranty

Low rolling resistance has become the new clarion call from car manufacturers hoping to eke out every last 1/10th of a mile per gallon for EPA ratings, but Michelin's new Defender tire takes a different tack, claiming the highest mileage warranty yet: 90,000 clicks, up to 21,000 more miles than competitors.

Pennies On The Mile: Michelin® Defender® Tires Aim to Save the Fuel, Last 90,000 Miles

Typically, if it’s not super-sticky, high-performance rubber, we’re not all that excited when new tires come out. But Michelin has some interesting ideas in the Defender, and if the tires can truly last up to 90,000 miles in the real world, the company might raise an eyebrow or two.

Get to use the mileage warranty

          Comments about Defender:

The most miles I've gotten out of a tire on my 2007 Ford Freestar is 35,000. No one makes a tire in a 225/60/16 that can deal with the weight of a 5000+ pound minivan for the rated mileage. I thought that buying the best tire out there as far as mileage warranty goes would help my situation. Well I've got 37,000 on these and was told that I would no longer be serviced at my local tire shop because my tread depth is too low and they recommend new tires. 5-7 32nd's average between all 4 tires. Good thing is they will give me a decent chunk of $$$ towards my next set since these didn't even make it to the warranties half way mark.

The tires are great in every other category though, smooth, quiet.

          Better than Deadicated LRR Tire

                Comments about Defender:

Much better handling, quieter, more stable, more comfortable ride and better steering than dedicated LRR tires that we replaced. Mileage seems very similar (although only a few hundred miles). Much better than OEM tires in every way also.

These tires seem modestly heavier and there is a slight difference in acceleration.

                Highly recommended for a prius.

                      Comments about Defender:

I have had these tires on for almost 1 week. A big difference with the Honda CR-V original tires. The sales person said these were quiet and he was right. I got the 255/65R17's on all four. I'd love to see how they handle in the winter months even though I have all wheel drive. Great tire.. :-)
