Tire Diagnosis
The problem may be: Tire Damage That Requires Repair
If your tire looks like this, your tire may have damage that requires repair.
Make certain that your spare tire is always ready to go into service.
Tire Damage Issues:
- Most punctures, nail holes, or cuts up to ¼" confined to the tread may be satisfactorily repaired by trained personnel using industry-approved procedures.
- An on-the-wheel plug-only repair is not reliable and is dangerous because the inside of a tire must be inspected after a puncture.
- Check your spare regularly for proper air pressure and be sure that it is in good condition.
- If your vehicle is equipped with one of the several types of temporary spares, be sure to check the spare tire's sidewall for the correct inflation pressure, speed, and mileage limitations.
What can I do?
The proper repair of a radial tire includes the placing of a rubber patch on the inner liner of the tire and a rubber filling of the hole by a professional. Do not attempt to have repaired tires with tread punctures larger than 1/4" or any sidewall puncture. Also, do not have tires repaired that are worn below 2/32" tread depth.
A tire that loses all or most of its air pressure must be removed from the wheel for a complete inspection to be sure it is not internally damaged.
Driving for even short distances on underinflated tires is dangerous and often damages the tires beyond repair.
